The sale book

The Hollis family, Challis, Idaho

Black cattle, open range and bulls that hold up

We run 400 registered Angus cows between the Salmon River and the Lost River Range. The cows winter on hay and sagebrush flats and summer on Forest Service ground up Garden Creek, so the bulls we sell already know rough country.

Every bull gets a breeding exam, a semen test and a few long rides through the hills before he goes in the sale book.

An old log barn on open range below snowy mountains

Walt and June Hollis bought 300 acres in Round Valley with forty commercial cows and recorded the BH bar brand that spring. Walt sold his first bulls off the back of a stock truck on Main Street in Challis.

Their son Dale switched the herd to registered Angus, started weighing every calf at birth and held the first bull sale in the old Challis sale barn. Twenty-two bulls sold that day.

Dale's daughter Jo runs the place with her husband Cody and their two kids. The herd is up to 400 cows, the sale has moved home to the ranch, and Dale still sorts pairs every fall.

How we run them

Cattle that winter on the flats and summer in the high country

We move the herd five times a year and rest every pasture at least one season out of three. It's slower work, and it raises cows that hold their flesh on grass and bulls that travel.
